About Nyan-mageNyan-mage was at the forefront of the present ‘yuru-chara’ mascot boom. With a unique combination of small head and long body Nyan-mage has three whiskers on each cheek and a red collar with a golden bell. His super-cute dazed look and shuffling gait is the key to his popularity.
Due to a television commercial urging people to ‘jump at Nyan-mage’ there was a succession of cases where people actually did jump at Nyan-mage, however due to safety concerns this is now prohibited.

Since birth, Nyan-mage has gone through a number of changes in style - sometimes a little overweight and sometimes trying out a new persona!
During the spring-summer period it’s often possible to find Nyan-mage setting out for a day-trip.
Recently Nyan-mage has slimmed down again and has a bit more of a grown up look. And it looks like Nyan-mage also received a little bit of makeup advice on the side too!

“A cat but with a top knot!” this is Nyan-mage’s trademark which is also half the reason behind his name. Leaving the hair a little rough gives the appearance of a ronin (masterlass samurai).
Bright eyes, but it’s hard to tell exactly where he is looking. It is also said that Nyan-mage ‘doesn’t see what he doesn’t want to see’.
This is what gives support to the claim that some people make that Nyan-mage is really a cat. These six straight whiskers are cared for on a daily basis.
A small, puckered up mouth. Not a fussy eater, Nyan-mage has great table manners.
This is Nyan-mage’s trade mark pose when greeting people and of course when taking a commemorative photo. Stand along side Nyan-mage, copy his pose and call out ‘Nyan!’ to ensure you get the best shot.
Apparently much slimmer in his youth, Nyan-mage has grown chubby with age. “What a cute belly!” is a cry often heard.
Strangely tall for a ‘yuru-chara’. Nyan-mage must bend down to greet small children but sometimes they still cry out in fright. Sorry about that!
Among the Edo townspeople you might hear the complaint that the lazy Nyan-mage always knocks off work early. While he doesn’t mean any harm Nyan-mage has recently been feeling under the weather, which means that regular rest is called for. While notoriously elusive, there are a few spots where you can usually spot this cute character so if you really want to meet up with Nyan-mage you should ask one of the nearby Edo townspeople.
